Dudley Jack Barnato Joel was born on 26th April 1904 (St George, Hanover Square, London Q2-1904 1A:427), son of Lt.Col. Solomon Barnato J.P. and Ellen JOEL (née RIDLEY).

1911 census...He has not been found in this census. Given the nature of his family he may well have not been in UK.

Educated at Repton, he became a diamond merchant, resident at Moulton Paddocks, Newmarket and 74 Brook Street, London. His father bought Moulton Paddocks from the estate of Sir Ernest Cassels, and on his father's death in 1931, Dudley inherited the property. He was M.P. for Dudley 1931-1941

Married Esme P. OLDHAM in Westminster in 1936, she died in the first half of 1939 . Widower Dudley was at Moulton Paddocks for the 1939 register, occupation, Member of Parliament.


On 13th September 1940, the S.S. 'Registan' (5886 tons) of F.C. Strick & Co Ltd, London was requisitioned by the Royal Navy and converted to the ocean boarding vessel (OBV) HMS Registan (F 106).




On 27th May 1941, the ship was bombed by German aircraft off Cape Cornwall. The ship caught fire and 63 crew members were lost. The survivors were rescued by HMS Wivern (D 66), HMS Vansittart (D 64) and HMS Wild Swan (D 62) and landed at Milford Haven. The badly damaged ship was towed to Falmouth by the British tug Goliath, and beached at St.Mawes on 29th May 1941. She was rebuilt in Falmouth to a merchantman and was returned to the owner in November 1941.

Another local man was killed on the Registan with Dudley, he was leading Seaman Douglas Rowland CHARLES from Burwell.

At 01.12 hours on 29th September 1942 the unescorted 'Registan' was torpedoed and sunk by U-332(Johannes Liebe) about 140 miles east of Barbados. Eleven crew members and five gunners were lost. The master, 34 crew members and 3 gunners were picked up on 30th September by the Argentinian merchantman 'Rio Neuqueen' and landed at Pernambuco.
